Drain Cleaning FAQ
What are signs of a blocked drain?
Blockages announce themselves weeks before they stop a drain completely. The useful skill is not spotting a blocked drain, which is obvious, but reading the signs that tell you where the problem is.
Short answer
The early signs are easy to miss. Water that drains more slowly than it did last month is the first, followed by gurgling from a nearby fixture when another one drains, which is air being pulled past a partial restriction. A sour or sewage smell means debris is sitting in the line long enough to decompose, and small dark flies around a drain mean a biofilm has built up inside it. The signs that matter most are the ones involving more than one fixture: a toilet that bubbles when the washing machine empties, a tub that backs up when the toilet flushes, or water appearing at a basement floor drain. Those point at the main line rather than the fixture, and they tend to get worse quickly.
The Early Signs, in the Order They Usually Appear
- Slower drainage than last month. Gradual change is easy to normalise. If a sink that used to empty while you walked away now needs watching, something is narrowing.
- Gurgling from a nearby fixture. Air being drawn past a partial restriction, or through a trap because the vent path is compromised. A specific and reliable early signal.
- Smell. Sour or sewage-like odour means material is sitting in the line long enough to decompose, or a trap has dried out and is letting gas through.
- Small dark flies around the drain. Drain flies breed in biofilm. Their presence means there is an established organic layer inside the pipe.
- Water marks at a floor drain. A ring of silt or a damp patch around a basement floor drain means it has backed up at some point, possibly while nobody was watching.
Telling a Branch Problem From a Main Line Problem
This distinction decides both urgency and cost, and you can make it yourself in five minutes without tools.
It is a branch line if exactly one fixture is affected and everything else in the house drains normally. The blockage is between that fixture and the point where its line joins the main. This is the routine case, it is not urgent, and the simple methods in the best thing to clean out drains frequently resolve it.
It is the main line if any of these are true: a toilet bubbles or its level changes when the washing machine drains or a bath empties; a tub or shower backs up when a toilet is flushed; water appears at the lowest drain in the house, usually a basement floor drain; or two or more fixtures on different branches slow down in the same week. Fixtures connect to each other only at the main, so symptoms crossing between them locate the problem there.
A main line restriction is time-sensitive, because the next stage is sewage entering the house at the lowest point. If you are seeing it, stop using water, and call (970) 499-0516 — we run 24/7 emergency plumbing across Northern Colorado. What counts as a plumbing emergency sets out where the line sits.
What Each Sign Tends to Mean Locally
In Northern Colorado a few causes recur often enough to be worth naming. Recurring blockages in an older neighbourhood with mature trees are usually root intrusion at a clay pipe joint, and the giveaway is a cable that comes back with fine root hair on it. A kitchen line that slows a little further every year is almost always a grease lining plus hard-water scale, which is why jetting outlasts cabling there. Multiple slow fixtures in a house on a private system can be the septic tank or drain field rather than the plumbing, and a tank that has not been pumped in years is the first thing to check.
Whichever pattern fits, the step that removes the guesswork is a camera inspection, which is included in the scope on our drain cleaning page. Knowing whether you are looking at roots, grease, a sag or a crack is what decides between a cleaning and a sewer line repair, and it is not something any symptom can tell you with certainty.

Still Draining Slowly? Let Us Look Inside the Pipe
We scope before we quote. A camera inspection shows whether you have grease, mineral scale, tree roots, a sagging section or a cracked pipe, and that is what decides between cabling, jetting and a repair.
